Lake Wildensee

Another beautiful lake in Bavaria is Wildensee near Mittenwald.

At only around 2 meters deep, it is one of the warmest bathing lakes in the area and a popular destination for hikers and cyclists. Nestled in untouched nature, this small mountain lake lies northwest of Mittenwald at 1,136 meters above sea level, facing the Karwendel mountains.

In view of the lake is the Gasthof Wildensee, originally a Goaßoim (goat alpine hut). Right next to the lake, on a small rise, stands a tiny Marian chapel, built in 1960 by Anton Tiefenbrunner in gratitude for returning home safely from World War II.

Hiking, Cycling, Skiing

Within the extensive trail network of Kranzberg, Wildensee is a popular destination year-round. In summer, the shores of this small bathing lake invite visitors to relax—enjoy nature, let your mind wander, and give tired hiking legs a refreshing break.

In winter, well-maintained winter hiking paths lead to the mountain inn Gasthof Wildensee at 1,180 meters. On its sunny terrace, with views of the Wetterstein massif, Bavarian specialties and homemade cakes taste especially delightful. The Kranzberg family ski area is also located very close to Wildensee, making it perfect for winter sports enthusiasts.
