Lüftlmalerei (fresco painting)

The attention of anybody visiting the places of Mittenwald , Krün and Wallgau will be attracted by the many houses decorated with pictures. The so-called Lüftlmalereien are manifold. Scenes from the Bible or the turbulent history of the Upper Isar Valley are represented in the main. The Lüftlemalerei is, however, not a relic from times past, even today there are artists dedicated to embellishing the house facades, converting the places into lively picture books.

These works of art can be seen during a round tour through Mittenwald , Krün or Wallgau . If you like, you can have the most beautiful representations shown to you and the associated stories of wood rafting and the Bozner market recounted to you during an introduction into the Lüftlmalerei.  A particularly large number of old Lüftlmalereien is found in the Gries district of Mittenwald. There you will find painted house facades dating back to the 18th century that have survived to the present day.
