Lake Barmsee

“Oafach schea” — simply beautiful — is how locals and visitors alike describe Lake Barmsee. And rightly so, because the natural spectacle at the largest lake in the Alpenwelt Karwendel is truly impressive: Barmsee can dramatically mirror the Karwendel mountains glowing in the evening light, the blue-and-white sky, or the dreamy winter landscape.

This bathing lake, reaching depths of up to 30 meters, lies at the foot of the mountains southwest of Krün and Wallgau, surrounded by unspoiled nature. Reeds covered in hoarfrost, gnarled maple trees, and the crisp mountain air make Lake Barmsee especially enchanting even in winter.

Lake Longing

The best way to experience Lake Barmsee is along the Three Lakes Trail. This hike connects Barmsee with Geroldsee and Grubsee. From spring onward, vast carpets of blossoms appear—crocuses, gentians, campions, and even orchids.

In summer, the waters of Barmsee are refreshingly clear and can warm up to 24°C—perfect for swimming. A leisurely bike ride leads from Krün and Wallgau through the forest directly to the northwestern shore of the lake, where the sun lingers for a long time. There, you can relax on the grass or swim in small gravel coves.

In winter, cross-country ski trails and winter hiking paths run along the lake. You can glide along sportily or stroll at a relaxed pace by the shore, enjoying the wide, sunlit landscape.

The best thing about Lake Barmsee: whether hiking, swimming, or cross-country skiing, you always have a view of the magnificent mountain panorama.
