Karwendel
The Karwendel mountains are steeply uphill. Viewed directly from Mittenwald , the Westliche Karwendelspitze at 2385m is the highest point in the imposing mountain silhouette. Hidden behind this wall are even higher giants, led by the Birkarspitze at 2749m. Bavaria and Tyrol share the mighty mountain range of the Northern Limestone Alps, the Karwendel region stretches between the Isar and Inn rivers. The flanks of Alpenwelt Karwendel merge directly into the Tyrolean Karwendel Alpine Park. Here in the largest protected area in the Eastern Alps, eagles circle above chamois, ibex and marmots. Hundreds of mountain sheep also spend the alpine summer on the smaller Bavarian part. One of the largest ptarmigan populations in the Alps also lives here. Between all the mountain peaks lie forests, small alpine pastures and rushing streams.
