The scenic beauty of the Isar Valley offers a variety of habitats for plants typical of the Alps and Alpine foothills. In addition to hay meadows in the valley, rough meadows and alpine pastures represent particularly species-rich habitats. The wide gravel banks of the Isar River offer a unique feature. With its constantly changing course, this is one of the last refuges of the German tamarisk (Myricaria germanica), a formerly widespread pioneer plant. Many of the species living here are endangered specialists with special adaptations to their respective habitats and astonishing strategies for surviving in extreme locations.
