Tour description

One of the most impressive undertakings in the Alpenwelt Karwendel region is the complete circuit around the mighty Wetterstein massif. An early start is important, as your riding time alone can easily total up to eight hours. The day-long tour starts at Bahnhofplatz in the center of Mittenwald with a ride to the two mountain lakes – Lautersee & Ferchensee – and down to Elmau, before climbing again toward the Hintergraseck alpine hut. Passing the nearby Vordergraseck, the route leads down to the ski stadium in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Along the railway line and the Bavarian Zugspitzbahn cog railway, passing the base station of the Alpspitzbahn cog railway, the comfortable bike path leads to Hammersbach and Obergrainau. Here, the ascent begins to the lovely Eibsee lake and further up to the Hochthörlen-Hütte alpine hut at 1,459 meters. The steep descent will take bikers down to Ehrwald, where things get quite steep again. The climb to the Ehrwalder Alm alpine restaurant is among the most challenging on the route, but the unparalleled views of the Wetterstein mountains make it worth it at the end. From the highest point of the approach, the rapid descent leads through the idyllic Gaistal valley to Leutasch. Bikers will ride on the bike path through the mostly flat Leutasch valley back to Mittenwald.
