Matthias Klotz (1653–1743) may be regarded as the founder of Mittenwald violin making. Klotz probably learned his trade from an instrument maker in Füssen before working as a journeyman for Pietro Railich in Padua in 1672 and 1678. Nothing is known about the following years of his life until his return to Mittenwald in the 1680s.
