The church calendar
In addition to the main Christian festivals of Easter, Christmas, Whitsun, "Kirchweih" (the annual celebration to mark the dedication of a church), the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Ascension Day when it is traditional to wear folklore costumes there are also other high days.
On the festivals of Corpus Christi and Harvest Thanksgiving when the Blessed Sacrement is processed around the community, it is time for the people of the towns and villages to don their very best folklore costumes. Another wonderful spectacle is the sight of all the children of the community proudly carrying their "Palmbüschl“ (palm fronds) and "Kräuterbüschl" (bunches of herbs) to church to be blessed on Palm Sunday and on the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (15th Aug.). These are then placed either in the cowshed or in the house in the niche with the crucifix and the bunches from the previous year are thrown on the fire.
Other festivals that are still considered to be very important are the "Blessing of St. Blaise" on the day after Candlemass and Ash Wednesday when worshippers are blessed with a mark of ashes placed on their forehead.
All three churches in Alpenwelt Karwendel, that make such an important contribution to the culture of the area, are well worth a visit.
