Carnival in Alpenwelt Karwendel

...A special piece of tradition...

Great importance is still attached to customs and tradition in the Alpenwelt Karwendel region.  This becomes particularly obvious during carnival season when carnival revelers (Maschkera) can be seen with their hand-carved wooden masks in the historic town centers of Mittenwald , Krün and Wallgau .

“Fat Thursday (Unsinniger Donnerstag)”

A very special moment every year is when the “Schellenrührer” leap out of one of the historic building entrances in the tradition-steeped heart of Mittenwald’s town center just as the bell tower of the Saints Peter and Paul Parish Church strikes noon. Lead by a figure symbolizing springtime, the 12 “Schellenrührer”, each of whom represents one month of the year, waken the first spring spirits by ringing heavy cowbells.

But it’s not just the “Schellenrührer” who contribute to the advent of spring in Alpenwelt Karwendel; there are also the “Goaslschnalzer”, the “Pfannenziacher” and many other gnarled figures. This centuries old custom attracts many visitors to the pedestrian zones of the Karwendel Alpine region every year.
